Why Your Canva Facebook Ads All Look the Same, and How to Fix It

Why it happens

Canva is a good design tool. The sameness comes from how most ads get made in it.

  1. The template sets the structure. Headline on top, product in the middle, button at the bottom. Swap the photo and the color, and the ad still has the same bones.
  2. Templates are shared. The one you picked is open to everyone else too, so your ad can look like other brands' ads as well as your own.
  3. Your habits fill the gaps. Same fonts, same spacing, same phrasing, because that is what you reach for at 10pm.
  4. The words come last. The copy gets written after the design, squeezed into whatever space the template left.

Five fixes you can make inside Canva

FixWhat to do
Change the idea firstBefore opening Canva, write the one thing this ad says: a problem, a proof point, an offer, a product close-up, a comparison
Build your own layoutStart from a blank canvas with your own grid instead of the most popular template
Write the copy firstHeadline and primary text before any design, so the words lead the layout
Use your own photosProduct and customer photos over stock, which other brands use too
Fill your Brand KitCanva's Brand Kit stores the logo, colors and fonts you give it, so at least those stay consistent

These work. They also take time, and the time is the reason most owners fall back on templates in the first place.

Key point

Your ads should look like your brand, not like the template. The fix is to start from the brand instead of from the layout.

Or start from your website

IMGPT turns that around. It reads your website first and builds a brand profile: colors, typography, voice, your customer and your products. You check and edit it before paying anything. Then it makes the ads from that profile.

On an ad you like, change one thing at a time: the background, the lighting, the product framing or the text placement. Or ask for a change in plain words.

When Canva is still the right tool

If you enjoy designing, have the evenings for it and want to art-direct every ad yourself, Canva is a fine choice, and the fixes above will help. If what you want is fresh ads that look like your brand without the evening, start from your website.
